This year, Rai decided to try a baking project. His first choice was digging dinosaur bones, but the closest child-friendly fossil dig site is 2 1/2 hours away. Instead, he chose to learn about baking with eggs. We have a favorite brownie recipe that gives you 2 options: 2 eggs for fudge-like brownies and 3 eggs for cake-like brownies. I've always made the fudge-like since Tony isn't a fan of eggs, but we turned a fun project.
To avoid Wikipedia, we used an online encyclopedia and a few online videos to learn about:
- The types of eggs people eat,
- How chicken eggs are collected,
- What an egg looks like on the inside, and
- Why we use eggs in cooking
I usually buy the "Cage Free, Free-Range" chicken eggs at the store, but it was interesting to see what the difference was between the regular, industrial conditions the cheaper eggs come from and the cage-free variations. Apparently, "Cage Free" only means a little more room than the non-cage-free. Only a few places actually have the open areas for hens to roam and the choices for food/water from which I expected these eggs to come.
