Each week leading up to Rai's first day of school, I've surprised him with a "big boy" school supply. We started with writing notepads, a special set of Hello Kitty pencils wit LOTS of erasers, and we'll eventually get to the letters and numbers flash cards. This past weekend was a "Mommy weekend", so we celebrated with setting up the BIG surprise: a computer.
Rai lives playing the educational games at school that teach reading, math, and other subjects and he's at the age where he understands that not everything is a toy. So, what better way to bring an old laptop out of retirement while giving Rai a new big boy responsibility/privilege?
Tony and I took Rai to IKEA to pick out a desk and chair, and Tony helped Rai pick out the finishing touches of his highly stimulated learning area.
After a weekend of furniture set up, disk reformatting, and parental control setup, Rai now knows how to turn on/off the computer and wireless mouse and can fully navigate his 4 programs: Minesweeper, Diego Dinosaur, Paint, and Word Pad.
Our plan for next week? Scan his favorite pictures and school work so he can have them on his computer.
